Gertjan Holtzhausen het ʼn cum laude graad in Vokale Kuns verkry aan die Tshwane Universiteit van Tegnologie in 2007. Sedertdien het hy reeds in meer as vyftig professionele teaterproduksies verskyn as onderskeidelik akteur, sanger, regisseur en skrywer. Dit sluit verhoë in wat strek vanaf die Staatsteater in Pretoria tot die Sand du Plessis-teater in Bloemfontein, asook kunstefeeste soos die Vrystaat Kunstefees (Bloemfontein), Woordfees (Stellenbosch) en die Gariepfees (Kimberley).  

Hy is tans ’n Streeksbestuurder by die ATKV en van sy persoonlike hoogtepunte sluit onder andere in: 

  • Gertjan was die vervaardiger en teksskrywer van die Mikado Miniature wat twee suksesvolle speelvakke by die Vissi D’arte Teater (in Pretoria in 2008 en 2009) gehad het en ook deur Die Beeld as een van Gauteng se top-20 innoverende produksies van 2009 aangewys is. Dit het verder ook ’n suksesvolle speelvak in 2009 by die Catalina Teater (in Durban) gehad.
  • Die Vukuzakhe! Projek: Tussen 2014 en 2016 was Gertjan die amptelike lektor, mentor, regisseur en teksskrywer vir hier Lotto-projek wat studente van Sebokeng, Sharpeville en Evaton in die kunste bemagtig het.
  • Gertjan was die teksskrywer vir die passiespel-trilogie: Pilatus – ’n kruis in die pad (2016); Judas Iskariot – wat is die prys van bloedgeld? (2017) en Jesus – die passiespel (2018). Dit was telkens in ’n uitverkoopte Sand du Plessis-teater opgevoer en word as Suid-Afrika se grootste Afrikaanse gemeenskapsteaterprojek beskou. Gertjan het ook telkens die rol van Jesus vertolk. Pilatus – ’n kruis in die pad het in 2017 die eenmalige ATKV-WOW-projektoekenning ontvang vir die beste ATKV-projek.
  • Sy eerste album, Allesins, was in die Centurion-teater op 6 Februarie 2016 vrygestel.
  • Op 16 Junie 2018 het Gertjan, as deel van die sanggroep Tharo, beide volksliedere op die Vrystaatstadion gesing vir die toets teen die Springbokke en Engeland.  

Gertjan is getroud met Leanne en hulle het 2 kinders. Hy glo eenvoudig: “it should be enough to have Jesus, and in Jesus all else” en dat dit noodsaaklik is om die klein dinge in die lewe te waardeer, want eendag gaan mens terugkyk en besef dat dit in werklikheid die groot momente van die lewe was.

Dit is vir hom ’n reusevoorreg om deel van die 2021 Harrismith Eisteddfod te mag wees!

Gertjan Holtzhausen holds a cum laude degree in Vocal Art obtained from the Tshwane University of Technology in 2007.

Since his studies, he has already appeared in more than fifty professional theatre productions either as actor, singer, director, producer or playwright – on stages ranging from the State Theatre (Pretoria) to the Sand du Plessis Theatre (Bloemfontein). He has also performed at various Art Festivals, including the Vrystaat Kunstefees (Bloemfontein), Woordfees (Stellenbosch) and the Gariepfees (Kimberley).

He is currently a regional manager at the Afrikaans Arts and Culture Association (ATKV).

Some personal highlights include:

  • Gertjan was the producer and playwright of the Mikado Miniature which had two successful runs at the Theatre Vissi D’arte (in Pretoria in 2008 and 2009) and which was appointed by Die Beeld as one of the top-20 most innovative productions of 2009. It furthermore toured to the Catalina Theatre (in Durban) for a two week run in 2009.
  • The Vukuzakhe! Project: From 2014 to 2016 Gertjan was the tutor, director and playwright for the Lotto funded programme which aimed to empower students with performing art skills in Sebokeng, Sharpeville and Evaton.
  • Gertjan was the playwright of the Passion Play trilogy: Pilatus – ’n kruis in die pad (2016); Judas Iskariot – wat is die prys van bloedgeld? (2017) and Jesus – die passiespel (2018). It was performed in the Sand du Plessis Theatre. This is seen as South Africa’s biggest Afrikaans theatre community project. He also played the role of Jesus in this trilogy. Pilatus – ’n kruis in die pad received the ATKV WOW award for the best national project in 2017.
  • His first album, Allesins, was launched at the Centurion Theatre on 6 February 2016.
  • He sang, as part of Tharo, the National Anthem at the test against the Springboks and England on 16 June 2018. 

Gertjan is married to Leanne and they have 2 children. 

He simply believes that it should be enough to have Jesus and in Jesus all else,” and that South Africa is a wonderfully diverse country with infinite potential.

He is very honoured to be part of the 2021 Harrismith Eisteddfod!
