ADDITIONAL RULES AND GUIDELINES

 

1.         SPEECH & DRAMA

 

1.1          Participants may select own poems, but the standard must be consistent with that of the poems prescribed for the relevant age groups. Only published works may be used.

 

1.2          Please note the maximum time stipulated for each item; this will be strictly adhered to during adjudication.  It includes entry and exit. Participants will be penalised if exceeding the maximum time.

 

1.3          Copies of all works to be presented to the adjudicator’s table on the day of the event.  Should more than one participant present the same work in any particular item, only one copy of the relevant work is required.  Please indicate the name of the participant and the item code on the copy.

 

1.4          Entries are limited to TEN entries per item per school or private in each grade.

 

1.5          Poetry:  Formal interpretation by making use of vocal and facial expression only.  No gestures or movement.

 

1.6          Dramatised Poetry:  The written word is dramatised using motivated gestures and movement.

 

1.7          Prose:  A narrative with characterization.  Interpretation by vocal and facial expression only. No gestures or movement.

 

1.8          Dramatised Prose:  The written word is dramatized using motivated gestures and movement.  Dialogue must be strongly characterised.

 

1.9          Scriptural Recital:  The recital of a phrase from the Holy Bible (any version).  Please note the maximum time as stated for each grade.

 

1.10        Monologue:  A portion of a play, a one-act or an adapted portion from a prose story.  The participant remains the same character throughout and must represent a person of the same sex.  Costume and props are optional.

 

1.11        Mime: Individual – Prepared.  Black mime costume, white face make-up and gloves are optional. No jewellery. Participants will be judged on their use of space and movement. No speech or props may be used. The choice of work presented in this item is not allowed to take place in the Afrikaans section. The topic of your presentation must be submitted to the adjudicator’s table table at the time of performance. Music may be used.

 

1.12        Unprepared Reading:  Literature will be provided by the adjudicator. Participants will be taken to a venue.  While the first participant is performing the next participant will prepare his piece of sight reading. Only learners with good reading skills should be entered. A school uniform must be worn, unless privately entered.

 

1.13        Dialogue:  a Comical or dramatic presentation by 2 – 5 participants of a portion of a play or an arrangement from a prose story.

 

1.14        Formal Choral Verse:  Only one poem may be presented.  No movement or gestures.  Maximum number of participants: 50.

 

1.15        Dramatic Choral Verse:  Dramatically presented.  Movement and gestures are essential, but costumes, décor, sound effects, music, lighting etc are optional.  Maximum number of participants: 40.

 

1.16        Poetry Programme:  A group of 2 – 7 participants must perform the works of one poet, either a programme of variety and versatility or, alternatively, a continuous theme.  Each participant should have more or less an equal part and take part in all sections of the programme.

 

1.17        One-act Play:  Must be within the comprehension and reference level of the participants.  The maximum play-time of 45 minutes must not be exceeded.  A maximum of 5 minutes will be allowed for setting up décor and 5 minutes for the removal thereof.

 

The play presented must be pure drama; no musical, operetta etc.  The number of participants is unlimited.  The participants should provide their own requisites and décor.

 

Each production must provide its own stage team under control of the production stage manager.  A copy of the stage manager’s text must subsequently be made available to the adjudicator, if requested.  Lighting facilities are not available and the use of lighting and décor will not contribute to the symbol awarded by the adjudicator.  A dress rehearsal can be arranged with the secretary.

2.            CREATIVE WRITING

 

2.1          Participants must enter in his/her grade.

 

2.2          Participants may submit maximum one poem and one essay.

 

2.3          Clearly indicate with the entry if the participant is an English Home Language (HL) learner or an English First Additional Language (FAL) learner.  It determines the prescribed number of words.

 

2.4          Participants should keep within the prescribed number of words for Home Language (HL) and First Additional Language (FAL) for their grade. The number of words must be indicated at the end of the written work, example [220 words].  Participants who do not keep to the number of words, will be penalized.

 

2.5          Entries must be written neatly in the participant’s own handwriting.

 

2.6          Writing must be the original work of the participant.  Neither plagiarism, nor translations will be allowed.

 

2.7          Participants must complete the included declaration of originality and sign it together with the teacher/tutor to confirm that the written work is their own. Attach the declaration to the front of the written workIf the written work is not signed, it will unfortunately not be judged.

 

2.8          Creative Writing MUST be handed in on or before Saturday 31 May 2025.

 

2.9          Own Choice Poetry:  Only participants from Grade 8 may enter.  Write one poem of at least 8 lines and not more than 30 lines on a topic of your own choice.

 

2.10         Essay:  Write an essay on one of the three topics.  Participants should remember to pay attention to style, structure and use of paragraphs.
